How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.

Product Overview

Tula's steel-cased 95-grain FMJ is the hottest ball load in this set: 1,017 fps and 218 ft-lbs at the muzzle, power factor 97. From a 25-yard zero it drops 1.9 inches at 50 yards and 13.8 inches at 100, with 908 fps left at 50, which is still the arc of a close-range pistol cartridge. The steel case is not reloadable and it is magnetic, and some ranges refuse steel outright, so check before you buy.

Against the brass-cased 95-grain loads it is faster across the board. Winchester USA 95 and Winchester Service Grade 95 both leave at 955 fps, 62 fps behind the Tula, and the Tula produces about 11 percent more recoil energy than either in the same pistol. Fiocchi 95 is 57 fps slower, and the Tula carries about 10 percent more recoil energy than it. Federal Range and Target 95 is the closest at 980 fps, 37 fps behind, and the Tula's recoil energy is about 6 percent higher. CCI Blazer Aluminum 95 is the softest of the group at 945 fps and 188 ft-lbs, and the Tula carries about 13 percent more recoil energy than it does. That 13 percent is the one gap here a shooter will notice in a pocket pistol.

Buy the Tula when you want the most energy a .380 ball load offers and your range allows steel cases. It is also the best rehearsal in this block for a carry load: Winchester PDX1 Defender 95 leaves at 1,000 fps with 211 ft-lbs, and the Tula produces about 3 percent more recoil energy than that hollow point, so a session of it will not leave you surprised by the carry round. If you want a soft session in a pocket pistol, or a brass case to reload, Winchester USA 95 at 955 fps is the pick, and CCI Blazer Aluminum 95 is the softest option here for anyone who does not reload.

Strengths
  • 218 ft-lbs at the muzzle is 28 ft-lbs over Winchester USA 95 and 15 over Federal Range and Target 95
  • Power factor of 97 is the highest of the six loads compared here
  • Leaves 17 fps faster than Winchester PDX1 Defender 95 with 7 ft-lbs more, the only ball load compared here that out-runs the hollow point
Limitations
  • Steel case is magnetic and cannot be reloaded, and some ranges refuse it; Winchester USA 95 and Fiocchi 95 give the same bullet weight in reloadable brass
  • 30 ft-lbs more than CCI Blazer Aluminum 95 at the muzzle, the wrong direction for a new shooter in a pocket pistol
  • 24 ft-lbs over Fiocchi 95, energy a paper target does not need and a pocket pistol has to absorb
