Product Overview
Federal designed the Solid Core specifically for woods defense and backcountry carry. The 200gr hard cast flat-nose bullet is coated with Federal's Syntech polymer jacket, which reduces barrel fouling and leading compared to bare hard cast lead. At 1,200 fps, it generates 639 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The Syntech coating also reduces friction in the bore, which can slightly improve velocity consistency from shot to shot. Nickel-plated brass cases complete the package for a load built to live in a holster on the trail.
The Solid Core competes directly with Underwood's 200gr Hard Cast load. Federal's version trades some velocity (1,200 fps vs 1,250 fps) for the Syntech coating, which keeps the barrel cleaner over extended shooting sessions. For a woods carry gun that might sit loaded for months between range trips, the reduced fouling matters. Federal also has wider retail distribution than Underwood, making the Solid Core easier to find at local shops and major online retailers.
Black bear defense is the primary use case. The flat-nose hard cast design punches through heavy bone and muscle tissue without expanding or fragmenting.
