Remington markets its Premier Magnum 17-grain AccuTip for small game. Its AccuTip-V bullet is polymer-tipped and rated at a G1 BC of .125, and this load starts it at 2,550 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it lands about 2.5 inches low at 150.
Compared with Hornady's Varmint Express 17-grain V-Max, the AccuTip matches it figure for figure: the same bullet weight, the same muzzle speed and the same G1 BC. At 150 yards a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 8 inches sideways. Compared with Winchester's lead-free Rimfire 15.5-grain NTX, which also starts at 2,550 fps, the AccuTip keeps more of its speed: at 150 yards it is moving 1,621 fps against 1,554, and the same wind pushes the Winchester about 9 inches.
Buy the AccuTip if you hunt small game with a .17 HMR, the use Remington markets it for. Pick Hornady's Varmint Express 17-grain V-Max if you want a load Hornady markets for varmints; the two match at every distance in the trajectory table.
