Federal Premium's 17-grain Hornady V-Max pairs Federal's loading with Hornady's V-Max bullet, and Federal markets it for varmints. The V-Max is a polymer-tipped varmint bullet with a G1 BC of .125, and Federal starts it at 2,530 fps. At 100 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 3 inches sideways.
Compared with Hornady's Varmint Express 17-grain V-Max, the Federal fires the same bullet 20 fps slower. By 150 yards the gap has shrunk to 15 fps, and the same wind pushes both bullets about 8 inches. Compared with Remington's Premier Magnum 17-grain AccuTip, another polymer-tipped 17-grain bullet with the same G1 BC, the Federal again trails by 20 fps at the muzzle. From a 100-yard zero both drop about 2.5 inches at 150 yards.
