About This Firearm

CMMG's Grendel is the one that arrives finished. A drop-in trigger, a 60/90-degree ambidextrous selector and a muzzle brake are all fitted from the factory, the barrel is 16.1 inches of 416 stainless in salt bath nitride with a 1:8 twist, and the stock is CMMG's RipStock. It weighs 6.4 lbs and has an MSRP of $1,599.95.

Look at the handguard before planning anything on top of it. CMMG's EML15 puts M-LOK slots at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock and deliberately leaves out the full-length Picatinny section, so a folding front sight or a clip-on device needs an M-LOK rail panel first. Below that, the rifle is conventional where it counts: the lower is a forged Mk4 AR-15 lower, so the trigger, grip, safety and stock hardware are ordinary parts, while the upper is billet. The muzzle thread is 5/8x24, the usual 6.5 mm size, under the brake. One 10-round CMMG magazine comes with it, and CMMG backs the rifle with a lifetime guarantee against material and workmanship defects.

The Alexander Arms Tactical, from the company that developed the cartridge, has an MSRP of $1,114.47 with a mil-spec trigger and an A2 flash hider. The Ruger American Rifle Generation II Predator is a bolt action at an MSRP of $769.00 that feeds from AR-style magazines in the same chambering.

Best For

GOOD
Hunting (Deer/Elk)
CMMG describes 6.5 Grendel as a flat-shooting round for medium to long range, and the 1:8 twist stabilizes the heavier hunting bullets. The brake keeps the sight picture steady for a second shot.
GOOD
Range/Target
The drop-in trigger and the ambidextrous selector are the two upgrades a Grendel owner tends to make anyway, and here they are already fitted. The RipStock adjusts length without a lever to fumble for.
FAIR
Varmint/Predator
It shoots flat enough and the stainless barrel holds up to strings of fire. Grendel ammunition costs more per shot than a .223 for the same job.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The trigger, selector and brake are all CMMG's own ZEROED parts fitted at the factory, so the rifle does not need the usual round of upgrades.
  • The barrel is 416 stainless with a salt bath nitride finish, which is a corrosion-resistant combination rather than a cosmetic one.
  • CMMG's lifetime quality guarantee covers material and workmanship defects on every product it makes.
Limitations
  • The handguard has no full-length top rail, so anything that wants Picatinny up front needs an M-LOK panel added.
  • A single magazine comes in the box, and it is a CMMG Grendel magazine rather than a part shared with 5.56 ARs.
  • A braked carbine is loud for whoever is standing next to you, and the brake is what the threads arrive wearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the handguard have a top Picatinny rail?

No. CMMG states that the EML15 handguard omits the full-length Picatinny section and puts M-LOK slots at 12 o'clock instead, so a front sight or a clip-on needs a rail panel.

Will AR-15 parts fit it?

The lower will take them. It is a forged Mk4 AR-15 lower, so trigger, grip, safety and stock hardware are standard. The upper is CMMG billet.

What is the muzzle thread?

It is 5/8x24, under the ZEROED muzzle brake, which is the common thread for 6.5 mm suppressor mounts.

What magazine does it use?

A CMMG 10-round Grendel magazine, and one comes with the rifle.

What is the warranty?

CMMG backs every product with a lifetime guarantee against material and workmanship defects.
