About This Firearm

Alexander Arms developed the 6.5 Grendel, and this is the plain version of its own rifle in the cartridge. A 16-inch barrel with a 1:8 twist, threaded 5/8-24 under an A2 flash hider, a mil-spec trigger, an A2 grip and a B5 Systems SOPMOD BRAVO stock. One 10-round magazine comes with it and it has an MSRP of $1,114.47.

The parts list tells you where the money did not go. The trigger is mil-spec and the charging handle is standard, which are the first two things a buyer of this rifle tends to change. The muzzle wears a flash hider rather than a brake, and there are no sights, so an optic is the first real purchase. The 5/8-24 thread is the usual size for 6.5 mm suppressors. Alexander Arms sells it direct, lists it on backorder, and will not ship to California, New Jersey or New York. Neither a weight nor an overall length is given for the rifle, so comparing it on paper against the others takes a scale.

The CMMG Resolute Mk4 in this caliber has an MSRP of $1,599.95 and spends the difference on a drop-in trigger, an ambidextrous selector and a brake. The Ruger American Rifle Generation II Predator is a 22-inch bolt action in the same chambering with an MSRP of $769.00.

Best For

GOOD
Hunting (Deer/Elk)
6.5 Grendel was built to put a deer-weight bullet through an AR-15-sized action, and a 1:8 twist handles the heavier hunting bullets. The 10-round magazine suits states that cap capacity for game.
GOOD
Range/Target
A 16-inch barrel in this cartridge is pleasant to shoot all afternoon, and the threaded muzzle takes a suppressor mount in a common size.
FAIR
Varmint/Predator
It will do the job, but a mil-spec trigger and no sights mean the rifle needs work before it suits small targets at distance.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • It comes from the company that designed the cartridge, which matters for chamber and barrel-extension questions more than it does for the parts list.
  • The B5 Systems SOPMOD BRAVO stock is a real stock rather than a bargain carbine item, and it is the one piece of furniture that did not get the mil-spec treatment.
  • The muzzle is already threaded 5/8-24, so a brake or a suppressor mount goes on without barrel work.
Limitations
  • A mil-spec trigger and a standard charging handle are both things an owner will want to replace, which adds to the real cost.
  • No weight or overall length is stated, which makes it the hardest rifle here to compare before handling one.
  • It ships direct and sits on backorder, and three states are excluded outright.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the muzzle thread?

It is 5/8-24 right hand, under an A2 flash hider. That is the common 6.5 mm thread, so suppressor mounts and brakes are easy to find.

What magazine does it come with?

One 10-round magazine. Grendel magazines are specific to the cartridge rather than shared with 5.56 AR magazines.

Is the trigger upgraded?

No. Alexander Arms lists a mil-spec trigger and a standard charging handle, so both are candidates for replacement.

Can it be shipped to my state?

Not if you are in California, New Jersey or New York. Alexander Arms lists the rifle as restricted and not shipped to those three.

How does it differ from the CMMG Resolute Mk4 in the same caliber?

The CMMG rifle arrives with a drop-in trigger, an ambidextrous 60/90-degree selector and a muzzle brake, and costs more for it. This one is the basic build in the same chambering.
