About This Firearm

The Noveske Chainsaw SBR is a forged-receiver .300 Blackout short-barreled rifle built for home defense and suppressed range work. It has an MSRP of $1,800. Its 7.94 inch 416R stainless barrel runs a pistol-length gas system and 5/8x24 threads behind an A2 birdcage flash hider, the pitch most .300 Blackout cans are cut for.

The free-float M-LOK handguard carries a full-length Picatinny top rail, so an optic bolts on as the rifle arrives, and no sights are included, so a red dot or a set of irons goes on the order with it. The government issue 90 degree safety selector sits on the left side, so a left-handed shooter reaches across the receiver to work it.

If you're cross-shopping, the Noveske N4 Diplomat 7.94" SBR has the same barrel length and the same 1:7 twist at an MSRP of $2,950, and the difference buys billet receivers, Magpul MBUS Pro steel sights and an ambidextrous selector. The CMMG Banshee Mk4 SBR has an MSRP of $1,549.95, an 8 inch barrel and a 24 inch package at 5.2 lbs. It shares the Chainsaw's 5/8x24 threads, so one .300 Blackout can covers either rifle.

Best For

GOOD
Home Defense
The B5 Systems Bravo stock and B5 type 22 grip are the same furniture Noveske fits to its dearer rifles, so nothing on the gun is a budget part you grow out of. M-LOK slots sit every 45 degrees around the handguard, which puts a light at an angle instead of flat on the side where a door frame catches it.
GOOD
Suppressed Range Work
Noveske hand polishes the .300 Blackout chamber on this barrel, and the 1:7 twist is the fast end of the range for the heavy subsonic bullets the caliber is loaded with. Both help a rifle that will spend its life behind a suppressor.
FAIR
Competition
Noveske's single stage trigger breaks at 5 lbs, with a DLC coated shoe and a nickel Teflon hammer, so the pull is clean for a service trigger. Timed shooting is where a two-stage unit earns its keep, and that is a separate buy.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • Both receivers are forged 7075-T6 aluminum with extended feed ramps cut into the upper.
  • The bolt is phosphated Carpenter 158 steel and magnetic particle inspected, so the part that takes the beating with a can on it is a tested one.
  • The magazine in the box is a Gen 3 PMAG marked for .300 Blackout, not a 5.56 body pressed into service.
Limitations
  • An A2 birdcage does nothing for recoil and throws noise sideways, which is unpleasant on a barrel this short when the can is off.
  • The trigger is a fixed single stage, so a lighter pull means a different fire control group.
  • One magazine ships with it, so a defensive load-out needs more before the gun is useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if your state caps magazine capacity?

Noveske swaps the 30 round PMAG for a reduced capacity magazine when the rifle ships to an address in a state that limits magazine size, so the box contents change with the delivery address.

What other versions of the Chainsaw are there?

Noveske sells the Chainsaw as a caliber and barrel length grid, with longer barrels and 5.56 NATO builds above this one in price. Finish is not an option on any of them, since the Chainsaw is hardcoat type III anodized and nothing else.

Will an AR-15 optic mount fit?

Yes. The top rail is Picatinny and runs the length of the handguard, so AR-15 rings and mounts index on it normally. The handguard free-floats, so a mount can bridge the receiver and the rail without touching the barrel.

What does the hand polished chamber do for feeding?

It smooths the surface a cartridge rides on as it chambers and extracts, which is the sort of detail that shows up with sticky subsonic loads and a dirty gun.
