About This Firearm

The SIG Sauer MCX-LTAW SBR is a folding-stock semi-automatic .300 Blackout short-barreled rifle built for suppressed range work and duty use. It has an MSRP of $2,699.99. Its 6.75 inch cold hammer forged barrel carries a 1:5 twist and 5/8x24 threads, under a handguard built around a full-length heat shield, so a hot barrel stays off the support hand.

The handguard takes M-LOK accessories directly, a two-stage Match Duo trigger comes in it, and so does one 30 round polymer magazine. The skeletonized KM stock folds at a push button, which takes it to 22.3 inches for a bag. The tube at the muzzle is a factory-installed training unit and not a suppressor, so a can is a separate purchase.

If you're cross-shopping, the Sig Sauer MCX Rattler is no longer made and is a used buy now, with a 5.5 inch barrel, 23.5 inches and 5.7 lbs. The Q Honey Badger has an MSRP of $2,799 and a 7 inch barrel, and at 4.8 lbs it is 2.2 lbs under the LTAW's 7 lbs. The heat shield and the folding stock are where that extra weight goes.

Best For

GOOD
Suppressed Range Work
SIG lists the gas system as adjustable, which is the setting you turn down when a suppressor raises port pressure. A short .300 Blackout gun with a can on it and no gas adjustment runs hard and sends gas back along the charging handle.
GOOD
Training
The training tube ships installed, so the rifle handles, balances and fits a case the way it will once a can is on the threads. Bag work, mounting drills and vehicle practice all carry over to the suppressed gun.
FAIR
Home Defense
Open and shouldered it is 31 inches, which is a long swing in a hallway. The stock folds and does not collapse, so the length of pull is whatever SIG set it at, in a t-shirt or in a vest.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The receiver is a lightweight alloy with a black anodized finish, and the grip is polymer, so the weight that is there is in the barrel and the stock.
  • 5/8x24 is the common .300 Blackout pitch, so a can bought for another rifle in the caliber screws straight on.
  • The two-stage trigger takes up before it breaks, which is easier to call on a precise shot than one long single-stage pull.
Limitations
  • The tube on the muzzle does nothing for sound, so out of the box this is as loud as any .300 Blackout rifle with a bare muzzle.
  • There is no forward assist on the upper, so a round that stops short of the chamber comes out with the charging handle.
  • The accessory rail is M-LOK, so Picatinny lights and lasers need an adapter before they mount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it take standard AR-15 magazines?

Yes. It feeds from AR-15 pattern magazines in .300 Blackout, and the one SIG puts in the box is its own 30 round polymer magazine.

Can the barrel or upper be changed?

SIG lists the LTAW as modular, which on the MCX pattern means the barrel assembly comes out of the upper instead of being pinned into it. SIG lists one barrel for the LTAW, so take the barrel it ships with as the gun you get.

Why is the handguard built around a heat shield?

The handguard follows SIG's LVAW design, where the shield runs its full length. A 6.75 inch barrel puts the gas port and the hot section of the barrel directly under the support hand, and a suppressor adds more heat to that, so the shield is there to keep the hand off it.
