Federal markets its American Eagle 150-grain FMJBT for target shooting, competition and long range. It fires a full metal jacket boat-tail bullet, a plain practice bullet with a tapered base, with a G1 BC of .408. Muzzle velocity is 2,820 fps.
Compared with Fiocchi's 150-grain FMJBT, the American Eagle starts 70 fps slower, yet the two drift almost the same. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each about 23 inches sideways. The Fiocchi kicks about 3 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's M80 149-grain FMJ, the American Eagle starts 30 fps faster, but the same wind pushes the Winchester only about 21 inches at 500. The Winchester also kicks about 2 percent less.
Buy the American Eagle if you want a 150-grain boat-tail practice load for drills and steel out to 500 yards. Pick the Winchester if wind at 400 and 500 yards is your main problem. Pick the Fiocchi if you want a faster start and a flatter path. Pick PMC's Bronze 147-grain FMJ BT if a lighter kick matters more; it kicks about 5 percent less.
