Product Overview
HSM markets its Tipping Point 165-grain for hunting medium to large game and for long-range shooting, and names deer, elk and other big game. It loads Hornady's SST, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet, and leaves the muzzle at 2,749 fps with 2,768 ft-lbs of energy. It trades some muzzle speed for a little less recoil.
Compared with Federal's 165-grain Swift Scirocco II, a bonded polymer-tipped bullet that Federal markets for big game at long range, the HSM SST load starts 51 fps slower and kicks about 2 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with HSM's own Tipping Point 165-grain Sierra GameChanger, the SST load leaves the muzzle 121 fps slower with 250 fewer ft-lbs of energy. In return it kicks about 5 percent less than the GameChanger load, which is the larger recoil gap of the two.
Buy the HSM SST load if you hunt deer or elk and want a tipped 165-grain bullet that kicks a little less than Federal's Scirocco II or HSM's GameChanger load. Pick the Federal if you want a bonded bullet and a little more speed. Pick the GameChanger load if you want more speed from the same maker and accept the extra recoil. If you also want a target load for range days, Hornady's Vintage Match 168-grain ELD Match starts 39 fps slower than the HSM SST load.
