Federal markets its 168-grain Berger Hybrid load for big game. Berger's Hybrid Hunter is a boat-tail hunting bullet with a long, streamlined nose. In the .30-06 it has a G1 BC of .489 and leaves the muzzle at 2,800 fps. At 500 yards it still carries 1,409 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with HSM's Trophy Gold 185-grain Hunting VLD, the Federal carries 17 fewer grains of bullet and saves a good deal of recoil: the HSM kicks about 18 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Barnes's 168-grain TTSX, a solid copper bullet at the same weight, the Federal leaves the muzzle 50 fps slower and kicks about 2 percent less.
