The Wyoming Game and Fish Department announced on October 28 that it confirmed chronic wasting disease in Deer Hunt Area 156 in the Jackson Region, the first detection there, according to a department announcement. The infected animal was an adult mule deer buck.
Chronic wasting disease, or CWD, is 100% fatal to infected deer, elk and moose. Game and Fish announces each time the disease turns up in a new hunt area so the public is informed.
Area 156 sits next to four places already listed as CWD-positive. Those are hunt area 128 (positive in 2016), area 148 (2021), area 155 (2022) and Grand Teton National Park (2018).
The department says continued monitoring helps it understand the potential impacts of the disease and evaluate future management actions. Hunters can help by submitting samples for free CWD testing, especially in priority or mandatory testing areas.
The department asks the public to contact the nearest Game and Fish office if an animal appears sick or injured. The announcement gave no new testing deadline or regulation change for Area 156.
