Apex and 24.7 Hunt Launch Two Cold Front 3-Inch Steel Shotshell Loads

Apex Ammunition and 24.7 Hunt introduced the Cold Front steel waterfowl shotshells on October 28, at $31.99 for 12 gauge and $29.99 for 20 gauge per 25-round box. Apex announced the series in a release from Columbus, Miss.

Cold Front is a pair of 3-inch steel shotshells for duck and goose hunting. Apex, a shotshell maker based in Columbus, Mississippi, built the loads in a partnership with 24.7 Hunt, the hunting brand founded by Ranar Moody Jr.

The product page lists the 12 gauge at $31.99 and the 20 gauge at $29.99. Both come in boxes of 25.

Apex’s Cold Front page describes Stratified #2/#4 as a layered payload that puts two pellet sizes, #2 and #4, in one shell. The steel is zinc-plated and graphite-coated for corrosion resistance. A limited bore contact wad, the part that carries the payload down the barrel, is meant to cut friction with the bore and support steady velocity and patterns.

Apex already sells a Stratified Waterfowl Series with the same layered approach, in 12 gauge #2/#4 and BB/#2 and in 20 gauge #2/#4. Apex published no list of compatible shotguns or chokes for Cold Front.

Jason Lonsberry, Apex’s president and CEO, said the two companies have worked together for years. “When the opportunity arose to build a product together, it was a natural fit,” he said.

Both gauges are listed on Apex’s online store as of October 28, in 25-round boxes and 200-round cases.
