About This Firearm
The Sig Sauer P226 is an alloy-framed hammer-fired .357 SIG built for duty use. Sig's current pages carry the P226 in 9mm and no longer list this chambering, so a complete pistol is a used buy. The first shot comes on a long double-action pull and the rest on a short single-action one, and a decocker drops the hammer when the shooting stops.
There is no manual safety anywhere on the frame, which leaves the decocker, the slide catch and the takedown lever as the controls. The slide is stainless under a Nitron finish over a hard-coat anodized alloy frame, and the grips are Sig's one-piece E2 polymer. The barrel is carbon steel and turns 1:16. The slide has no optic cut, so a dot means milling, and with the chambering out of production, magazines are worth buying whenever they turn up.
If you're cross-shopping, the Sig Sauer P229 is the compact version of the same action, 34.4 oz behind a 3.9-inch barrel with 12 rounds and the same 4.4 lb single-action break. The Glock 31 Gen4 is the striker-fired full-size in this cartridge, 15 rounds at 26.1 oz behind a 4.49-inch barrel with a 6.3 lb pull, and it is out of production too. The Sig has the decocker and the alloy frame. The Glock holds three more rounds and weighs less.

Strengths & Limitations
- Hammer down on a loaded chamber is the designed carry condition, so there is no safety to wipe off under stress.
- A Nitron-coated stainless slide on an anodized alloy frame is the finish combination Sig built for duty wear.
- The E2 grip is one piece, so there are no panel screws to loosen and nothing to rattle.
- No optic cut in the slide, and the Classic frame has no modern optic-ready build in this chambering to step up to.
- The transition from a long first pull to a short second one takes range time to master, and a shooter who skips that work shoots two different triggers.
- Out of production in .357 SIG, so magazines and spare parts come from the used market.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the decocker do?
It lowers the hammer without firing. Sig's Classic-line manual tells the owner to push down on the decocking lever to decock the hammer, which returns the pistol to a double-action first shot.
What is the twist rate?
A 1:16 right-hand twist.
Why an alloy frame instead of polymer?
Sig built the Classic line on a hard-coat anodized alloy frame. It weighs more than a polymer frame of the same size, and that mass keeps a high-pressure cartridge from feeling harsh.
