Product Overview

Aguila loads this 124gr FMJ to 1,115 fps, producing 342 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Those numbers put it on the softer side of the 124-grain 9mm market. Manufactured by Industrias Tecnos in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Aguila has been producing ammunition since 1961 and holds long-standing contracts with the Mexican military. The 124-grain bullet carries more momentum than lighter 115gr loads while generating less recoil than hotter European imports running in the 1,180 fps range.

The velocity gap between this load and other 124gr options is about 65 fps, and you can feel it. Muzzle flip is tamer, and your hands take less punishment over a long afternoon of shooting. Aguila's brass is on the softer side metallurgically, so it feeds and extracts smoothly across different pistol platforms. Reloaders should know that the softer brass may show case mouth splits sooner than harder European brass. The trade-off is a round that runs gently through your gun without the snap of NATO-pressure loads.

This load fits best in a regular training rotation where round count matters more than velocity. Newer shooters learning grip and trigger control will benefit from the lighter recoil impulse. It also works well in pistol-caliber carbines, where the lower muzzle velocity is irrelevant and the 124gr weight still drives blowback actions without issue. Competition shooters should check their division's power factor requirements before committing, since the milder load may fall below minimum thresholds depending on your pistol's barrel length.

Strengths
  • Softest recoil of the common 124gr imports at 1,115 fps, which makes a real difference after 300+ rounds in a single session
  • Feeds and cycles reliably in compact and subcompact pistols where hotter loads can produce excessive muzzle flip
  • The 124gr weight provides enough momentum to run pistol-caliber carbines without the feeding issues that sometimes plague lighter 115gr loads
  • Manufactured under Mexican military contract standards, so consistency across lots is tightly controlled
Limitations
  • Produces 342 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, which is roughly 40 ft-lbs less than S&B or Norma 124gr loads at the same bullet weight
  • The mild recoil does not replicate the feel of standard-pressure defensive ammunition, limiting its value as carry-gun practice ammo
  • May fall below minimum power factor thresholds in USPSA Production or IDPA depending on your pistol's barrel length
  • Brass cases are metallurgically softer than European-made alternatives, so reloaders may see case mouth cracking sooner
