Product Overview
Fiocchi Subsonic goes the other way from the rest of the 5.7x28mm lineup. It pairs a heavy 62-grain FMJ with a muzzle velocity of 1,050 fps and 152 ft-lbs of energy. At that speed the bullet stays under the 1,125 fps speed of sound, so with a suppressor on the gun there is no supersonic crack on top of the report. The FMJ itself is a plain practice bullet.
Low speed has one clear downside, and it is drop. From a 25-yard zero the bullet sits 1.6 inches low at 50 yards and 11.3 inches low at 100, so a 50-yard target needs a small hold and a 100-yard one needs a large one. This is a load for the distances where a pistol is normally shot, not for long steel. Recoil is the other thing to understand before buying. The heavier bullet makes up for the missing speed, so its recoil energy sits right among the fast loads in the caliber even though it leaves the muzzle hundreds of fps slower.
Buy it if you want a subsonic load and shoot at pistol distances. If you do not, American Eagle TMJ is the better practice load: it leaves the muzzle 605 fps faster and produces about 9 percent less recoil energy than the Subsonic in the same pistol. For the most energy from the same kind of recoil, FN Herstal SS197SR V-Max carries 268 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 116 more than the Subsonic, with about 1 percent less recoil energy in the same pistol.
