Product Overview
DoubleTap's Hunter +P 360-grain HCSLD is the heaviest bullet in .45 Colt here, a hard-cast flat-nose solid that does not expand and is built to drive deep and straight for hunting and bear defense. At 1,200 fps it makes 1,151 ft-lbs and a power factor of 432, the highest of any .45 Colt load on this site. It is also the top of the recoil chart. From a 25-yard zero it sits 1.2 inches low at 50 yards and 9.0 inches low at 100. This is a +P load; DoubleTap restricts it to large-frame Ruger revolvers and similar guns rated for it, so check your revolver before you buy.
The other two +P hunting solids get to nearly the same energy with lighter, faster bullets. The DoubleTap +P 255-grain HCSW is 250 fps faster and 39 ft-lbs ahead at the muzzle, but its power factor of 370 is 62 points lower. Buffalo Bore Heavy 300-grain SJFP lands between them, 19 ft-lbs ahead at the muzzle and 34 points lower on power factor. In other words this load buys its momentum with bullet weight rather than speed, and the recoil follows the weight.
Buy this if you already shoot heavy +P .45 Colt from a large-frame Ruger or similar and want the most bullet weight and momentum you can get for big game or bear country. It is the wrong first hot load: the DoubleTap Hunter 255-grain HCSW at 975 fps and 538 ft-lbs runs at standard pressure with about 65 percent less recoil energy in the same revolver, and Underwood 255-grain LSWCGC at 1,000 fps and 566 ft-lbs is the softer-lead choice for practice at about 63 percent less.
- Power factor of 432 is 162 percent over the 165 major floor, ahead of Buffalo Bore Heavy 300-grain SJFP at 398 and the DoubleTap +P 255-grain HCSW at 370
- 360 grains is 60 more than Buffalo Bore Heavy 300-grain SJFP and 105 more than the DoubleTap +P 255-grain HCSW
- The 25-yard hold works to 50 yards, where it is 1.2 inches low
- Highest recoil energy of the three: about 21 percent more than Buffalo Bore Heavy 300-grain SJFP and about 43 percent more than the DoubleTap +P 255-grain HCSW in the same revolver
- +P: the maker restricts it to large-frame Ruger revolvers and similar, and there is no standard-pressure 360-grain load to practice with
- Slowest of the three at 1,200 fps, 125 fps under Buffalo Bore Heavy 300-grain SJFP and 250 under the DoubleTap +P 255-grain HCSW
