Idaho Landowner Tags
Idaho's Landowner Appreciation Program gives controlled-hunt tags to landowners with 320 deeded acres in one game management unit, but 320-639 acres gets leftovers only - the real threshold for the first drawing is 640 acres in one GMU. Tags are drawn, weighted one chance per 640 acres, and valid only within the LAP controlled hunt area. Since Jul 1, 2026 it is unlawful to sell, market or buy a LAP tag, with a three-year program ban.
Checked against Idaho Department of Fish and Game rules, October 20, 2026. Where the rule is silent or its sources disagree, the line says so.

Hunting Your Own Land
A landowner in Idaho needs the same license and tag as any other hunter to take big game on their own property. The programs below change who gets a limited tag, not whether one is needed.

What You Get
| The tag | LAP controlled hunt tags valid only within the LAP controlled hunt area, drawn and weighted one chance per 640 acres. 640-4,999 acres gives 1 tag plus 1 extra per species; 5,000+ acres gives 2 plus 1.Sources conflict: IDAPA 13.01.04.400.06.c: two tags plus one extra per species versus IDAPA 13.01.04.400.06.d: one tag per species |
|---|---|
| Set-aside | 10 percent of the controlled tags in the area, rising to 25 percent if landowners oversubscribe it |
| Transfer or sale | No, unlawful since July 2026. Since Jul 1, 2026 it is unlawful to sell, market or buy a LAP tag, with a three-year program ban. Designation is free, forms must come from the landowner, and verbal designations do not count. |
Per-hunt LAP tag numbers are published (2026: 1,240 deer, 1,890 elk, 215 pronghorn, 22 fall bear) but there is no enrolled-property list. LAP applicants are exempt from nonresident limits, quotas and waiting periods, and fees track the landowner's own residency.
New for 2025–26: For 2026 LAP added turkey, moved the acreage test from controlled hunt area to game management unit, and made buying a tag unlawful with a three-year ban.

General Season or Limited Draw?
Elk uses 28 zones on an A/B tag system: 13 zones are uncapped (unlimited resident OTC), 13 are capped with a fixed first-come quota, and 2 are controlled-only (Hells Canyon, Owyhee). The resident general deer tag is not unit-locked and is valid in every general season of its type. Three different geographies coexist: elk zones for general tags, GMUs for deer seasons and controlled hunt areas for the draw and for LAP.
New for 2025–26: Nonresident general deer and elk tags became draw-only for 2026 (docket 13-0104-2401); the 2027 window is Dec 5-15, 2026 at $18 per species, up from $0. Statewide caps 15,500 deer and 12,815 elk, nonresidents limited to 10-15 percent of hunters per unit or zone, and nonresident deer is unit-specific at purchase.

Things That Trip People Up
- 320 acres gets leftover tags only; the first drawing needs 640 acres in one GMU.
- Government land inside the parcel does not count toward the acreage test.
- Leased land never qualifies - LAP is deeded-acreage only.
- The 2026 rule moved the acreage test from controlled hunt area to GMU, so pre-2026 guidance measures the wrong geography.
- Capped elk zones publish their resident, nonresident and outfitter split only in the Nonresident Supplemental Proclamation, not the main brochure.
- Idaho Code 36-1107 expressly excludes antelope, elk, deer and moose from landowner self-help, so there is no damage-kill route for those species.
