Product Overview
Hornady markets its Critical Defense 45-grain FTX for personal defense, in short-barreled, concealed-carry style guns. The FTX bullet is a hollow point with a soft, flexible polymer tip filling its nose. It comes in a nickel-plated case, and Hornady rates the bullet at a G1 BC of .110.
Hornady's published speed for this load is 1,000 fps, with 100 ft-lbs of energy, measured from a 1.875-inch handgun barrel. That is the kind of short barrel Hornady designs the load for, and it is the only barrel Hornady gives a speed for. A gun with a longer or shorter barrel will not match those figures exactly, so read 1,000 fps as a guide for small carry handguns rather than a number for every .22 Magnum. From that barrel it leaves the muzzle below the speed of sound, 1,125 fps.
