About This Firearm

The LWRC IC-MKII SBR is a short-stroke piston 5.56 NATO short-barreled rifle built for duty use and home defense. It has an MSRP of $2,865. Its gas block has two positions, one set for a suppressor's extra gas and one for shooting without a can.

Skirmish back-up iron sights come on the rifle, and the MonoForge upper is machined as one piece with its optic rail, so a sight clamps to the receiver. Every lower control is ambidextrous, the bolt catch, release and magazine release included, so a left-handed shooter never reaches over the gun. A 30-round Magpul PMAG comes in the box and the 10.5 inch barrel is threaded 1/2x28.

If you're cross-shopping, the LWRC IC DI has an MSRP of $1,817 and runs direct impingement instead of a piston, with a 16.1 inch barrel, 35.25 inches overall and 6.6 lbs. The IWI Tavor X95 SBR has an MSRP of $1,999 and is also piston driven, and its bullpup layout fits a longer 13 inch barrel into a 22.8 inch rifle, so the shorter gun gives up the AR controls.

Best For

GOOD
Home Defense
A short-stroke piston vents gas at the barrel instead of sending it back into the receiver, so the bolt carrier and chamber stay cleaner through the long periods a house gun sits between range trips. The Skirmish sights are iron, so a dead battery in the dark does not leave the rifle blind.
GOOD
Duty Use
LWRC torques every barrel to one setting at the factory, so the fit is the same gun to gun, and black nitride on the outside as well as the bore shrugs off sweat and rain. The grip is LWRC's Ultra Combat shape and the stock is its compact pattern, both sized for a gloved hand.
FAIR
Suppressed Range Work
Changing the gas setting means getting at the block inside the handguard, so moving back and forth between suppressed and unsuppressed inside one range session is slow. Set it for the way the rifle will mostly be shot and leave it there.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • LWRC machines the upper and its rail base from one piece of aluminum, which the company says is stronger than a standard-pattern upper.
  • The handguard takes M-LOK accessories directly, so lights and sling mounts bolt on without rail sections.
  • The same rifle is sold in pistol and rifle form and in four Cerakote colors beside the black anodized finish.
Limitations
  • The piston system is LWRC's own patented design, so its carrier and operating parts come from LWRC and not the AR parts bin.
  • The barrel is a heavy profile, which puts what weight a 10.5 inch rifle has out toward the muzzle.
  • It ships with one magazine, so spares are a day-one purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which magazines does it take?

AR-15 magazines, and LWRC includes one 30-round Magpul PMAG with the rifle.

Can the gas block stay on its suppressed setting all the time?

Each setting matches a different amount of gas. With the can off, the suppressed setting leaves the rifle less gas than it was built to run on, so the setting goes back when the can does.

What else does the IC-MKII line cover?

The same model is built with longer barrels up to 16.1 inches and in pistol and rifle form. This is the 10.5 inch short-barreled rifle build.
