About This Firearm

The IWI Zion-15 SBR is a direct-impingement AR-pattern 5.56 NATO short-barreled rifle built for home defense and training. It has an MSRP of $999.99. Its 10.5 inch barrel is heavy profile 4150 chrome moly vanadium with 5R rifling and a 1:8 twist, which handles heavy 5.56 bullets and leaves fewer sharp corners in the bore for fouling.

A B5 Systems stock and grip come fitted, and the stock runs from 26 inches collapsed to 30.75 inches extended, so the length of pull suits a shirt or a plate carrier. The handguard free floats off the barrel and takes M-LOK accessories. One 30-round Magpul PMAG is in the box, and the muzzle is threaded 1/2x28 for a suppressor or a brake.

If you're cross-shopping, the 16 inch IWI Zion-15 carries the same MSRP of $999.99 and the same 1:8 barrel, at 36.25 inches and 6.9 lbs. The Daniel Defense MK18 SBR has an MSRP of $2,499 for a 10.3 inch barrel, 29.875 inches overall and 5.88 lbs, so the extra money goes on weight and build, not on barrel length.

Best For

GOOD
Home Defense
The stock drops to 26 inches for a short shooter in a doorway and extends for a jacket or a carrier, with no tools either way. At 6.5 lbs the rifle can be held in one hand long enough to open a door.
GOOD
Training
The lower is AR-pattern, so magazines, triggers and spares are the common ones a shooter may already own. A 1:8 twist shoots light practice loads and heavy match bullets with no change of setup.
FAIR
Suppressed Range Work
A direct impingement system on a 10.5 inch barrel pushes gas back through the receiver, and a suppressor adds to it, so long strings run dirty and warm. The nitride bore gives that carbon less to grip, so cleaning is a wet patch and a brush.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The handguard does not touch the barrel, so a sling or a bipod pulling on it does not shift your zero.
  • IWI builds and assembles the rifle at its own plant in the United States.
  • A heavy profile barrel holds its point of aim through more shots before heat moves it than a pencil profile does.
Limitations
  • A 10.5 inch barrel gives up muzzle velocity to a 16 inch one, so 5.56 runs out of useful energy closer in.
  • The B5 stock and grip are the parts you touch most, and changing either one means buying a replacement.
  • It comes with one magazine, so a second and third are on the list before a class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which magazines does it take?

AR-15 magazines. IWI includes one 30-round Magpul PMAG with the rifle.

Will AR-15 parts fit the lower?

The lower is AR-pattern, so AR-15 triggers, grips and stocks fit. The handguard, stock and grip it arrives with are IWI and B5 Systems parts.

Does the handguard clear a suppressor?

The handguard stops short of the muzzle, so the threads sit exposed and a can screws on without touching it.
