About This Firearm

The PTR PDWR SBR FS is a roller-delayed blowback .308 Winchester short-barreled rifle built for truck gun work. It has an MSRP of $1,914 and comes as a 2026 release ordered through a dealer. Its 8.5 inch heavy-contour barrel puts a full-power cartridge in a 31 inch rifle.

A 6.9 inch steel Picatinny rail runs over the receiver, room for a scope on a cantilever mount, and the HG3M aluminum handguard carries M-LOK slots. The fixed PTR stock does not change length of pull for a heavy coat or a plate carrier. One 20-round aluminum magazine comes with it, the rifle weighs 8.25 lbs bare, and the trigger pull runs 9 to 10 lbs.

If you're cross-shopping, the PTR GI uses the same roller-delayed action in a full-size rifle, with an MSRP of $1,529, an 18 inch barrel and 9.5 lbs on the sling. The Ruger SFAR is no longer made, so it is a used buy now, and it puts a 16.1 inch barrel on a gas-driven AR action at 6.8 lbs, less weight to carry in a longer rifle.

Best For

GOOD
Suppressed Range Work
A roller-delayed action has no gas port, so the back pressure a can creates does not need a gas setting dialed in to keep the gun running. The heavy-contour barrel also has metal in it to soak up heat through a long string.
FAIR
Suppressed Hunting
A barrel this short gives up velocity against a hunting-length .308, which pulls in the range where the bullet still does its work. The 1:10 twist suits the heavier bullets that help make up for a short barrel.
FAIR
Home Defense
A full-power .308 fired from a short barrel indoors is punishing with a bare muzzle, which sits closer to your ear here than a carbine's would. With a can threaded on it is a different gun to shoot in a hallway.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The barrel is stress relieved, which keeps a heavy tube from walking its point of aim as it warms up.
  • It ships in a polymer case with foam padding and a trigger cable lock.
  • The trigger group sits in a removable housing, so it drops out as a unit when the rifle gets cleaned.
Limitations
  • One magazine comes with the rifle, so a spare is an extra purchase.
  • At 8.25 lbs it is heavy for its length, and an optic and a suppressor push it higher.
  • A 9 to 10 lb pull is a long way from the 4.5 lb two-stage in the Ruger SFAR, and lightening it means new parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 5/8x24 thread fit standard .30-caliber suppressors?

Yes. The muzzle is cut 5/8x24, the common thread on .30-caliber barrels, so a .308-rated can or muzzle device threads straight on with no adapter.

How does a blowback action handle full-power .308?

Rollers lock the bolt against the barrel extension as the round fires, then let it travel back under load. That delay holds chamber pressure until the bullet is gone, which is how a gun with no gas system copes with a full-power cartridge.

How is the rifle finished?

PTR powder coats it in black over a Parkerized base, inside and out, a finish meant to take handling and storage.
