About This Firearm

Springfield built the Waypoint as a carbon-stocked mountain rifle, and .300 PRC is the big-cartridge end of that line. A 24-inch fluted stainless barrel in a 1:8.5 twist with a removable radial brake puts it at 7.69 lbs, and it has an MSRP of $1,995.00 with a hard case and one three-round Accumag.

Mounting is the easy part. A Picatinny base comes fitted in the Remington 700 long-action pattern on 6-48 screws, so any rings work and a replacement base is a common part. The stock has M-LOK slots and flush QD cups moulded in, which covers a bipod and a sling without adapters. Two things are not stated: the thread pitch under the brake, so measure before ordering a suppressor mount, and a length of pull, because the comb and buttpad are fixed on this configuration. The TriggerTech unit adjusts between 2.5 and 5 lbs from outside the stock.

The Browning X-Bolt 2 Speed in the same caliber has an MSRP of $1,569.99 with two more inches of barrel and an adjustable comb, though its scope bases are a Browning pattern. The Weatherby Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Ti is two pounds lighter in .300 Weatherby Magnum on a titanium action, for an MSRP of $3,499.00.

Best For

GOOD
Hunting (Deer/Elk)
A carbon fiber stock over a stainless barrelled action in Cerakote is the combination that holds zero through wet weather and a pack frame. The brake unscrews when you want a shorter, quieter rifle in the truck.
GOOD
Long Range/Precision
The twist suits the heavy high-BC bullets .300 PRC exists for, the base is already on the receiver, and the stock takes a bipod on its M-LOK slots rather than on a stud adapter.
FAIR
Range/Target
The adjustable trigger and the fitted rail make it pleasant to shoot from a bench. The cartridge and a fluted sporter-weight barrel both argue against long strings.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The Picatinny base uses the Remington 700 long-action footprint, so rings, bases and rail accessories are ordinary parts rather than proprietary ones.
  • M-LOK slots and QD cups are moulded into the stock, so a bipod and a sling mount without studs or adapters.
  • The brake is removable and the TriggerTech trigger adjusts from the outside, so two of the usual aftermarket jobs are already done.
Limitations
  • No thread pitch is given for the muzzle, so a suppressor mount or a different brake means measuring the barrel first.
  • This configuration has a fixed comb and no length of pull adjustment, so stock fit is whatever it is.
  • One magazine comes with it and spares come from Springfield, because the Accumag is not an AICS pattern magazine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What scope rings and bases does it take?

A Picatinny base is already installed, in the Remington 700 long-action pattern on 6-48 screws. That means any Picatinny rings fit, and a taller or canted base is a stock part rather than a special order.

Is the barrel threaded?

Yes. Springfield describes the radial brake as removable, which is what the thread is for, but no pitch is stated anywhere for this rifle. Measure the muzzle or have a shop do it before buying a mount.

How does it differ from the 6.5 PRC version of this rifle?

The barrel and the action length. The .300 PRC gets a 1:8.5 twist against the 6.5 PRC's 1:8, rides on a long action and comes out a few ounces heavier. The stock, trigger, brake, base and case are the same.

What comes in the box?

A heavy-duty rifle case and one three-round Accumag magazine. No sights, rings or bipod, and no spare magazine.
