About This Firearm

Wilson Combat builds the Super Sniper around a heavy fluted stainless match barrel, and the .224 Valkyrie version runs 22 inches on a 1:6.5 twist picked for long bullets. A rifle-length gas system with a low-profile gas block sits under an M-LOK handguard, the upper and lower receivers are billet, and the trigger unit breaks at 4 lbs. The rifle weighs 8.2 lbs, measures 37.5 inches, and has an MSRP of $2,601.

Settle the magazine question first. .224 Valkyrie is a 6.8mm SPC case necked down to .22 caliber, so it feeds from 6.8 SPC magazines on a 6.8 SPC bolt, not from the AR-15 magazines already in the safe. No magazines come with the rifle, and neither do sights. The muzzle is threaded 1/2x28 behind a protector with no brake fitted, the handguard covers the gas block so lights and bipods are ordinary M-LOK hardware, and Wilson Combat will build it to California-compliant specification.

The CMMG Resolute Mk4 in 6mm ARC has an MSRP of $1,599.95, weighs 6.4 lbs on a 16.1-inch barrel and includes a 10-round magazine. The Smith & Wesson Volunteer XV Pro M-LOK in the same cartridge has an MSRP of $1,589.00 and ships with folding sights and a 25-round magazine. Neither shares a bolt or a magazine with this rifle.

Best For

GOOD
Long Range/Precision
A rifle-length gas system on a 22-inch barrel is the gentlest gas timing an AR-15 can be given, and the fast twist is there to stabilize heavy match bullets. Wilson Combat quotes supersonic flight past 1,300 yards for the cartridge.
GOOD
Competition
The trigger unit is fitted at the factory rather than sold as an upgrade, the receivers are billet and the barrel is fluted stainless. Wilson Combat lists competition among the uses for this rifle.
FAIR
Hunting (Deer/Elk)
Wilson Combat lists hunting among the uses, and the cartridge carries about half the recoil of the .308-based rounds with comparable ballistics. It is a light-bullet .22 centerfire, so state caliber rules decide what it can legally be used on.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The gas system, barrel and trigger are all specified for accuracy from the start, so the usual AR upgrade path is already paid for.
  • The handguard covers the gas block in one piece of M-LOK rail, which means a bipod, a light and a sling mount all use the same common hardware.
  • Wilson Combat will build the rifle to California-compliant specification, which is not an option on most rifles of this kind.
Limitations
  • A 6.8 SPC bolt and magazines narrow the parts market considerably compared with a 5.56 AR, and the magazines are not supplied.
  • No sights, no mount and no magazine come with it, so the rifle as delivered cannot be fired.
  • The heavy fluted barrel puts it at the top end of the AR-15 weight range before an optic goes on, which is the cost of the accuracy it is built for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What magazines does it take?

6.8mm SPC magazines. .224 Valkyrie is a necked-down 6.8 SPC case and uses that magazine, so standard AR-15 5.56 magazines will not feed it. None are included with the rifle.

Does it need a different bolt from a 5.56 AR?

Yes, a 6.8 SPC bolt, which is what this rifle is built with. That is also what to order if a bolt ever needs replacing, and it is why a .224 Valkyrie upper will not run on a 5.56 bolt carrier group.

Is the barrel threaded?

Yes, 1/2x28, with a thread protector fitted and no muzzle device. A brake or a suppressor mount is a direct swap for the protector.

Does it come with sights?

No. The upper is a billet flat-top with a Picatinny top rail and nothing on it, so an optic and a mount are part of the purchase.

Can it be ordered California compliant?

Yes. The rifle can be built to meet California-compliant specifications, which is worth settling at order time rather than after it arrives.
