About This Firearm

The Hunter is the plainest rifle Bergara wraps around one of its own barrels, and the .22-250 Remington version is laid out as a short-action varmint rifle. The barrel is 4140 chrome-moly in a No. 4 taper, 22 inches with a 1:9 twist, and four rounds sit in an internal box under a hinged floorplate. It weighs 7.1 lbs, measures 41.5 inches, and has an MSRP of $949. Bergara guarantees sub-MOA accuracy with factory match-grade ammunition.

What arrives is a barreled action in a stock and nothing else. No rail, no rings, no sights, and no magazine either, because this configuration feeds from the internal box; a detachable magazine is a factory option in this chambering. Mounting is at least cheap to solve, since any standard Remington 700 rail or ring set fits the B-14 receiver. The muzzle is unthreaded, which puts a brake or a suppressor behind gunsmith work, and the molded polymer stock has no comb or length-of-pull adjustment.

The Bergara B-14 Ridge in .243 Winchester has an MSRP of $999 and puts more steel out front at 7.50 lbs in the same overall length. The Ruger American Rifle Generation II Prairie in .223 Remington has an MSRP of $769, feeds 10 rounds from AR-pattern magazines and arrives threaded with a Picatinny base fitted.

Best For

GOOD
Varmint/Predator
A flat, fast .22 centerfire for prairie dogs, coyotes and woodchucks, with an accuracy guarantee behind it rather than a claim about the barrel. The twist is cut for the light bullets this cartridge is loaded with.
GOOD
Range/Target
Weight sits in the barrel rather than the stock, which settles the rifle over a bipod. The two-lug action has a coned bolt nose and breech and a sliding plate extractor, so feeding and extraction are the smooth part of the experience.
FAIR
Long Range/Precision
The barreled action can hold up its end, but nothing around it is set up for the job: no rail, a hunting-contour barrel that heats in strings, and a fixed-comb stock with no cheek or length adjustment.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The Remington 700 footprint means bases, rings, one-piece rails and replacement stocks are commodity parts rather than special orders.
  • A hinged floorplate empties the magazine without cycling live rounds through the chamber, which is the safer way to end a day in the field.
  • Bergara puts the same accuracy guarantee on its cheapest rifle that it puts on the rest of the line.
Limitations
  • Nothing for mounting or sighting is included, so a rail, rings and an optic all come on top of the rifle.
  • The muzzle is plain, which makes threading the first job before a brake or a suppressor.
  • The stock is molded polymer with no spacers and no adjustable comb, and the rifle carries no sights to fall back on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What scope bases or rings fit it?

Any standard Remington 700 rail works, because Bergara machines the B-14 receiver to that footprint. The .22-250 is a short action, so order short-action bases or a short-action one-piece rail. None of it is in the box.

Does it come with a magazine?

No. This configuration uses an internal box magazine with a hinged floorplate, so there is nothing detachable to supply. Bergara offers a detachable magazine as an option on the Hunter in this chambering.

Is the barrel threaded?

No. The .22-250 Hunter leaves the factory with a plain muzzle, so a brake or a suppressor mount means sending the barrel out for threading.

What accuracy does Bergara guarantee?

Sub-MOA at 100 yards, measured as three-shot groups with available factory match-grade ammunition. Handloads void the rifle warranty, so the guarantee is tied to factory ammunition as well.
