The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 400 yards.

Product Overview

HSM's 350-grain FMJ is a full metal jacket load, the usual build for range practice rather than hunting. A full metal jacket bullet has a jacket that covers its nose. This one leaves the muzzle at 1,700 fps with 2,246 ft-lbs of energy.

At 350 grains, the bullet sits in the middle of the .45-70 weights on the site: heavier than the 300-grain hunting loads and lighter than the 405- to 460-grain lead and gas-check loads. Its 1,700 fps is a moderate speed for that bullet weight, not the speed of a hot lever-gun hunting load.

Buy the HSM if you want a 350-grain full metal jacket load for range practice and for getting to know a .45-70 rifle before you hunt with it. If you need a hunting load at the same bullet weight, Buffalo Bore's 350-grain JFN is a jacketed flat-nose bullet that Buffalo Bore markets for dangerous game and smaller game. It leaves the muzzle 445 fps faster and kicks about 24 percent harder in the same rifle. Buffalo Bore limits it to the modern rifles it lists and warns never to fire it in a Trapdoor.

Strengths
  • A 350-grain bullet at 1,700 fps for range practice
  • Carries 2,246 ft-lbs at the muzzle
  • Softer recoil than a hot 350-grain hunting load at the same bullet weight
Limitations
  • A full metal jacket is a range bullet, so it is not a hunting load
  • Slower than a hot 350-grain hunting load, so practice with it will not match that load's speed or recoil
  • Kicks harder than the 300-grain .45-70 loads on the site
