Product Overview
Winchester markets its Varmint-X line for varmints and predators, from prairie dogs to coyotes. This load uses a 40-grain polymer-tipped varmint bullet with a G1 BC of .200, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,600 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 10 inches at 300.
Compared with Federal's 50-grain Varmint & Predator JHP, which Federal markets for the same prairie dogs to coyotes, the Varmint-X starts 275 fps faster and kicks about 29 percent less in the same rifle. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Varmint-X about 25 inches sideways and the Federal about 27. From the same 100-yard zero, the Federal drops about 12 inches at 300. The Federal's heavier 50-grain hollow point does leave the muzzle with a little more energy.
Buy the Varmint-X if you want a very fast start and light recoil for varmints. Pick the Federal Varmint & Predator 50-grain if you want a jacketed hollow point rather than a polymer tip, and a little more energy at the muzzle. Pick Federal's 53-grain Hornady V-Max if wind is your main problem: at 400 yards the same wind pushes it about 17 inches. Its heavier bullet also kicks harder in the same rifle.
