Kentucky Hunting Laws

Kentucky allows any centerfire caliber for deer — there is no minimum — but bans full-metal-jacket and tracer ammunition, prohibits rimfire for deer, and caps firearm capacity.

A magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds may not be used to take a deer. The cap is on magazine capacity, not on how many rounds you carry.

Muzzleloader

Kentucky sets no minimum caliber for muzzleloaders. Any muzzle-loading rifle, shotgun, or handgun is legal for deer.

All species

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife allows suppressors for any legal game animal, with a valid hunting licence. The agency frames it as requiring a federal permit for the suppressor, but that wording is the department's own gloss — no Kentucky statute or regulation imposes a permit condition, and the deer, elk, small game and migratory bird regulations say nothing about suppressors. Since ATF stopped issuing approvals in October 2026 there may be no federal permit to hold; filing the free voluntary registration is the simplest way to match the department's wording.

Federal Rules That Apply in Every State

These federal requirements apply in Kentucky on top of state law.

Federal law: only USFWS-approved nontoxic shot may be used — or even possessed — while hunting waterfowl, coots, and aggregate-bag species. 50 CFR § 20.21(j)(1)–(3)
Federal law: shotguns for migratory birds are limited to 3 shells total (magazine + chamber) with a one-piece plug; limited light-goose and September Canada goose season exceptions exist. 50 CFR § 20.21(b)
