About This Firearm

The Taurus TX22 Competition is a long-slide striker-fired .22 LR built for rimfire competition. It has an MSRP of $617. Its 5.25-inch bull barrel is threaded 1/2-28 and the slide above it is cut for a red dot, so the thread and the optic cut are both factory work.

Three magazines come in the box, each holding 16 rounds. The front sight is a fixed white dot and the rear one adjusts, with a white dot of its own, and both stay on the slide under a mounted optic. The grip is the standard TX22 frame, 1.25 inches wide and 5.44 inches tall, with a manual thumb safety over a trigger safety and a striker block. A Picatinny rail on the frame takes a light.

If you're cross-shopping, the standard Taurus TX22 has an MSRP of $349 with a 4.1-inch barrel and no optic cut, and it shares this gun's grip dimensions and magazines. A Sig Sauer P322 is also optics-ready and holds 20 rounds in a 7.0-inch pistol with a 4.0-inch barrel, and it arrives with two magazines, a threaded barrel adapter and a pair of interchangeable trigger shoes.

Best For

GOOD
Competition
The cut puts the dot down on the slide instead of up on a rail mount, which keeps the sight line near the bore and leaves the irons underneath usable as a backup when a battery dies mid-stage.
GOOD
Range/Target
The 1/2-28 thread is cut into the muzzle, with no adapter collar between the barrel and the can, so a rimfire suppressor screws straight on.
FAIR
Plinking/Training
It is cheap to feed and the magazines hold plenty, but the long slide and full-size grip are not a size match for a compact carry pistol. The standard Taurus TX22 is the closer stand-in for that.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • Three magazines come with the gun, one more than a Sig Sauer P322 includes.
  • The optic cut and the frame rail are both factory work, so the dot is the single part a third party supplies.
  • The bull barrel is alloy steel with a 1:16 twist, the same rifling as the standard TX22.
Limitations
  • The irons are plain white dots, with no tritium or fiber optic front offered on this model.
  • The long slide and the bull barrel put the pistol outside holsters and cases cut for the standard TX22.

Frequently Asked Questions

What optic footprint is the slide cut for?

Taurus lists the slide as optics-ready with a red dot mount, without naming the footprint.

Will standard TX22 magazines run in it?

Yes. Both TX22 models are built around the same magazine, so owning the pair means one spare pattern to stock.

How does the threading differ from the standard TX22?

This one is threaded at the muzzle. The standard gun carries its thread on a suppressor adapter collar that screws onto the barrel instead.
