The .22 LR is a rimfire cartridge dating to 1887, fired in bolt, semi-auto, lever and pump rifles and in pistols and revolvers. It's the round for teaching new shooters, plinking, rimfire target matches, and small game such as squirrels and rabbits. Bullets are usually 36 to 40 grains of plain, waxed or copper-plated lead.
Choose by velocity first. Standard velocity 40-grain loads, like Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity or Armscor 40gr, run close to the speed of sound, around 1,100 fps as a typical factory figure; they suit target shooting, and they're the usual pick for a suppressor. High velocity loads, like Aguila Super Extra HV 38gr HP, run about 1,200 to 1,300 fps and cycle semi-autos more reliably; the hollow points are for small game. Some semi-autos won't cycle standard velocity, so test a box first.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Almost no recoil or blast, so new shooters can learn trigger control without flinching.
- Small powder charge makes it quiet through a suppressor, especially with standard velocity loads.
- Chambered in nearly every action type, from single-shot rifles to revolvers.
Cons
- Rimfire priming misfires more often than centerfire.
- Drop and wind drift past 100 yards keep it a short-range small-game round; .17 HMR shoots flatter.
- Semi-autos can be picky about velocity and bullet shape, so a load that runs in one gun may jam another.
