About This Firearm
The Smith & Wesson M&P22 Compact is a polymer-framed blowback .22 LR pistol built for training and plinking. It has an MSRP of $439 and weighs 15.3 oz. Smith & Wesson built it as a reduced-scale version of its full-size M&P, so the controls, the grip shape and the rail all sit where an M&P shooter reaches for them.
The muzzle is threaded 3/8x24 and not the common 1/2x28, so a thread adapter goes on the list alongside the can. Two 10-round magazines come with it, the thumb safety is ambidextrous and the magazine release reverses. There is a magazine safety, so the pistol will not fire with the magazine out, and an internal key lock, and neither comes out. The rear sight adjusts with a screwdriver and there is no optic cut. The pistol is 6.65 inches long, 5.03 inches tall and 1.48 inches across.
Against its rivals, the Sig Sauer P322 holds 20 rounds at 17.1 oz, arrives cut for an optic and ships with a thread adapter, so it covers a dot and a can with nothing extra bought. The Taurus TX22 has an MSRP of $349, holds 16 rounds at 17.3 oz with three magazines and a 1/2x28 muzzle, so the thread question never comes up on it.

Strengths & Limitations
- The slide is aluminum alloy under a black hard coat anodize, which keeps the reciprocating mass light enough for rimfire pressure to work it.
- The recoil guide rod and spring are captured as one unit, so the spring does not launch across a bench during reassembly.
- The magazine release reverses to the other side of the frame, so a left-handed shooter changes a part already in the gun.
- The 3/8x24 thread means an adapter before any suppressor goes on, and the adapter adds length ahead of the muzzle.
- A magazine safety and an internal key lock are both built in, and the factory does not offer the pistol without them.
- There is no optic cut, so the closest a dot gets is the frame rail under the barrel.

Frequently Asked Questions
What adapter does the 3/8x24 thread need?
A 3/8x24 to 1/2x28 adapter, which brings the muzzle to the common suppressor thread.
What does the internal hammer change?
The hammer sits inside the slide, so there is nothing to cock by thumb and nothing standing proud to catch on a pocket or a holster mouth.
Will centerfire M&P magazines fit it?
No. The M&P22 Compact uses its own 10-round rimfire magazines, and two of them come with the pistol.
