About This Firearm

The Ruger Super Wrangler is a six-shot single-action .22 revolver built for plinking and small game. It has an MSRP of $339 and weighs 37.7 oz. Two cylinders come in the box, one chambered in .22 LR and one in .22 WMR, so one revolver covers both rimfire cartridges.

The rear sight adjusts for windage and elevation over a ramp front, so each cylinder can be given its own zero. The frame is alloy steel under black Cerakote and the grip frame follows Ruger's Single-Six pattern with checkered synthetic panels. A transfer bar and a loading gate interlock mean all 6 chambers can be loaded with no empty one left under the hammer. Changing cylinders means opening the gate and drawing the base pin, which is quick on a bench and fiddly with cold hands.

If you're cross-shopping, the Ruger Wrangler has an MSRP of $269 at 30.0 oz, 7.7 oz lighter on an aluminum alloy frame, with fixed sights and one cylinder. The Heritage Rough Rider has an MSRP of $166 with a zinc alloy frame and fixed sights, so it is the cheapest of the three and has nothing to adjust.

Best For

GOOD
Small Game
The barrel is 5.5 inches on an 11.0-inch revolver, so there is a long span between the sights, and the .22 WMR cylinder adds a cartridge with more reach for rabbits and squirrels.
GOOD
Plinking
The grip frame takes Single-Six pattern panels, so wood or rubber replacements fit, and a steel-framed .22 at this weight hardly moves in the hand between shots.
FAIR
First Handgun
Cocking the hammer for every shot makes each one a deliberate sequence, which is useful for teaching. Loading and unloading through the gate is slow, and nothing on the revolver is cut or drilled for an optic.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The rear sight moves for elevation as well as windage, which a two-cylinder revolver needs, since .22 LR and .22 WMR do not print to the same place.
  • Cerakote over alloy steel is a sprayed ceramic coat, so a wet morning does not leave the rust spots bluing would.
  • Ruger builds it in the United States, so parts and service stay domestic.
Limitations
  • Ruger states that Super Wrangler cylinders will not interchange with Wrangler or Single-Six revolvers, so a spare cylinder has to be the right part for this model.
  • A box of fifty through six chambers is mostly loading, since every round goes in and comes out through the gate one at a time.
  • Nothing is cut or drilled for a sight mount, so a dot cannot be fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What twist does the barrel use?

1:14 right hand over six grooves, which covers both of the rimfire cartridges the revolver is chambered for.

Can it be carried with all six chambers loaded?

Yes. The transfer bar keeps the hammer off the firing pin until the trigger is held back, and the loading gate interlock keeps the cylinder from turning while the gate is open.

What should be checked when swapping cylinders?

That the base pin is pushed fully home and the gate closes on it, since the pin holds the cylinder in the frame.

Does the .22 WMR cylinder need a different zero?

Usually, which is why the rear sight adjusts. Set it for one cartridge, note the number of clicks and wind it back when the other cylinder goes in.
