Product Overview
Underwood's Extreme Defender load drives a 135-grain Xtreme Defender bullet, a fluted solid copper design the maker sells for defense, at 1,410 fps for 596 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The light bullet still makes a power factor of 190, about 25 points over the 165 USPSA major floor. From a 25-yard zero it is 0.9 inches low at 50 yards and 7.7 inches low at 100. The nickel-plated brass case can be reloaded.
The one close comparison on this site is the Fort Scott Munitions 225-grain TUI, another solid copper defensive load. The Fort Scott leaves at 869 fps with 377 ft-lbs, so the Underwood carries 219 ft-lbs more at the muzzle. Its much lighter bullet works out to about 18 percent less recoil energy in the same revolver. Both loads sit well above the 165 major floor, so neither is short of momentum by that measure.
Buy this if you carry a .45 Colt revolver for defense and want the most muzzle energy in this comparison with less recoil than the Fort Scott TUI. If you want a hollow point with still lower recoil, Hornady Critical Defense 185-grain FTX runs 920 fps and 348 ft-lbs with about 9 percent less recoil energy than this load in the same revolver. For practice or cowboy matches, Atomic's 200-grain LRNFP lead load at 800 fps and 284 ft-lbs recoils about 15 percent less than the Underwood.
