About This Firearm

The Henry H10 Provider is a walnut-stocked lever-action .45-70 Government built for hunting large game at close range. It has an MSRP of $1,135.00. Its walnut stock has a checkered pistol grip, which Henry says puts the wrist at a more natural angle when shooting from seated and supported positions.

It arrives sighted, with a brass bead up front and a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear carrying a diamond insert, so it can be zeroed with nothing bought. The tube holds six rounds and the swivel studs for a sling are already set in the wood. Length of pull is a fixed 14 inches with no spacers in the system. No scope base or rail comes with the rifle, so mounting an optic means buying a base.

If you're cross-shopping, the Rossi R95 has an MSRP of $1,060.99 with the same 20-inch barrel and six-round tube, 0.42 lbs lighter to carry. The Marlin 1895 SBL has an MSRP of $1,619 and comes with a ghost ring rear sight, a Picatinny rail and a muzzle threaded 11/16-24, none of which the Henry has. It is stainless with a laminate stock and weighs 7.30 lbs. All three hold six, and they differ in sights and finish.

Best For

GOOD
Hunting (Deer/Elk)
Henry lists the rifle for large game out to 100 yards, naming deer, bear, hogs and elk, which is as far as open sights reach on a cartridge that drops the way .45-70 does.
GOOD
Woods/Saddle Carry
At 39 inches overall it clears brush and fits a scabbard, and 7.25 lbs is enough rifle to keep full-power loads from being unpleasant to shoot. The sling studs are already in, so carrying it hands-free costs the price of a sling.
FAIR
Range/Target
The rear sight has enough travel to put a load where you want it at a hundred yards. Open sights and .45-70 recoil limit how long a session runs.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • Henry covers the rifle for the life of the product, with the owner's personal satisfaction guarantee alongside it.
  • Henry credits the 20-inch barrel with a steady, natural swing and with making more of the cartridge than a shorter one does.
  • A ventilated rubber recoil pad is fitted as standard.
Limitations
  • Length of pull is fixed, which is long for a smaller shooter and longer still over a winter coat.
  • The front sight is a brass bead, which gives the eye less to hold onto in last-light timber than the fiber optic and tritium ring on the Marlin 1895 SBL.
  • Walnut and blued steel want wiping down after a wet day, where the Marlin 1895 SBL's stainless and laminate do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What scope base does it take?

A Weaver 63B, bought separately. The receiver is drilled and tapped for it at the factory, so fitting a base needs a screwdriver and nothing more.

What is the rate of twist?

1:20. That is the same rate the Marlin 1895 SBL uses and a slower one than the Rossi R95's 1:12.

Is there a safety lever?

There is no lever to switch. The rifle uses a transfer bar, which comes up between the hammer and the firing pin as the trigger is pulled, so it can be carried with the hammer down on a loaded chamber.
