Product Overview
Hornady built the Vintage Match line for one thing: wringing match-grade accuracy from classic .30-06 rifles. The 168gr ELD Match bullet leaves the muzzle at 2710 fps with 2739 ft-lbs of energy, and its 0.523 G1 BC makes it one of the most aerodynamically efficient .30-06 loads available. That BC advantage means the bullet retains velocity better at distance than the Federal 168gr Berger Hybrid (0.489 BC) and arrives at 500 yards with less drop and less drift.
Vintage military rifle competitions are the primary arena for this load. The overall cartridge length and pressure levels are safe for M1 Garands, 1903 Springfields, and pre-64 Winchester Model 70s. The ELD Match bullet's Heat Shield tip resists deformation from aerodynamic heating during flight, which preserves the BC at extended range. Standard polymer tips can soften and change shape, degrading accuracy past 400 yards. The Heat Shield material does not.
Outside of competition, this load is a strong choice for precision practice at 300 to 600 yards. The 168gr weight stabilizes well in the 1:10 twist barrels common in older .30-06 rifles. Shooters developing their long-range fundamentals will see the difference in group sizes compared to bulk FMJ ammunition. The Barnes VOR-TEX 168gr TTSX (0.470 BC) and Federal Berger 168gr Hybrid (0.489 BC) both offer less aerodynamic efficiency at this weight, making the Vintage Match the clear pick for pure accuracy work.
