New Jersey Hunting Laws
New Jersey is a no-rifle state for deer: centerfire and rimfire rifles cannot be used to hunt deer, leaving shotgun (20–10 gauge, slug or buckshot), muzzleloader (.44 caliber minimum), and archery as the only options during the state's deer seasons. Handguns may be carried while hunting by a concealed-carry permit holder but cannot be used to take any wildlife, and New Jersey's statewide ban on civilian suppressor ownership rules out suppressed hunting as well.

Federal rules that apply in every state
These federal requirements apply in New Jersey on top of state law.
Federal law: only USFWS-approved nontoxic shot may be used — or even possessed — while hunting waterfowl, coots, and aggregate-bag species.

Federal law: shotguns for migratory birds are limited to 3 shells total (magazine + chamber) with a one-piece plug; limited light-goose and September Canada goose season exceptions exist.
