Montana Hunting Laws
Montana sets no minimum or maximum caliber for centerfire rifles or handguns used on deer and elk, and no magazine/round-capacity limit — a rare degree of freedom among Western states. The catch: air-powered guns aren't a legal big-game method at all, and the separate Muzzleloader Heritage season locks hunters into flintlock/percussion ignition, .45-caliber-minimum, no-scope loads.

Federal rules that apply in every state
These federal requirements apply in Montana on top of state law.
Federal law: only USFWS-approved nontoxic shot may be used — or even possessed — while hunting waterfowl, coots, and aggregate-bag species.

Federal law: shotguns for migratory birds are limited to 3 shells total (magazine + chamber) with a one-piece plug; limited light-goose and September Canada goose season exceptions exist.
