About This Firearm

The Colt Anaconda is a six-shot stainless double-action .44 Magnum built for handgun hunting and deliberate range work, and it has an MSRP of $1,699. It runs an oversized version of the Python's leaf-spring action, which Colt redesigned for the Anaconda's return in 2021.

The barrel sits under a full-length ventilated rib and ends in a recessed target crown. Hogue overmolded grips interchange with every Python grip Colt sells, so the grips that govern felt recoil come off the Python shelf too. Safety is mechanical and internal, a transfer bar with a rebounding hammer and a cylinder latch safety, and Colt fits no manual lever to its revolvers. The top strap has no optic cut, though Colt does sell a plate that fits an RMSc-pattern dot to Pythons and Anacondas.

If you're cross-shopping, the Smith & Wesson Model 629 covers the same job for an MSRP of $1,139 with a 4.13-inch barrel and 9.63 inches of length, which is easier to wear on a belt. The Ruger Super Redhawk has an MSRP of $1,549, weighs 53.0 oz behind a 7.5-inch barrel and has scope mounts machined into its rib, so it arrives ready for glass. The Anaconda brings the Python action and the Python parts shelf behind it.

Best For

GOOD
Range/Target
Colt describes the leaf-spring trigger as smooth as glass, and a double-action pull that does not stack lets the sight picture hold through the stroke.
GOOD
Hunting/Woods Carry
Frame and barrel are stainless in a semi-bright finish, which takes rain and sweat in a chest rig, and the 6.0-inch barrel gives a sight radius long enough to use the adjustable rear properly.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • A red ramp front and a fully adjustable target rear let the gun be zeroed for a chosen bullet weight.
  • Colt lists the Anaconda family in three barrel lengths on the same enlarged Python receiver, so the action can be had short or long.
  • It is current production, so cylinders, springs and sights come from Colt and not from a used-market search.
Limitations
  • The Smith & Wesson Model 629’s MSRP is $560 lower for the same six rounds and the same cartridge.
  • A full-length rib on a heavy stainless frame makes this a chest-rig revolver, not something to wear on a belt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it shoot .44 Special?

Yes. Colt lists the cylinder as holding six rounds of .44 Magnum or .44 Special, and the shorter case is the sensible way to practice with a revolver this size.

Which way does the rifling turn?

Left, at a 1 in 20 rate. It is a Colt habit and changes nothing a shooter will notice.

What does the recessed target crown do?

It sets the end of the rifling back from the muzzle face, so a knock against a rock or a truck bed cannot damage the part of the bore that releases the bullet.

Is there an optics-ready Anaconda?

Colt sells one plate for the Python and Anaconda in the RMSc pattern, and shows its longest Anaconda as optics ready.
