Alaska Landowner Tags

Alaska has no landowner program of any kind - no preference, tag, voucher or private-land permit for any big game. Allocation is by General Season harvest ticket, Drawing, Registration, Targeted, Tier I, Tier II or Community Subsistence Harvest, and none of those is ownership-based. In the regulations the word landowner appears only in the context of access permission.

Hunting Your Own Land

A landowner in Alaska needs the same license and tag as any other hunter to take big game on their own property. The programs below change who gets a limited tag, not whether one is needed.

No Landowner Tag Program

Alaska gives landowners no tags, vouchers or preference for big game. Owning the ground changes access, not the draw.

General Season or Limited Draw?

General Season means a harvest ticket, shown as HT in the permit column, and it covers caribou, Sitka black-tailed deer, moose and sheep in all units plus black bear in many; every other hunt is Drawing, Registration, Targeted, Tier I or II or Community Subsistence Harvest. Nonresidents face the same hunt types, with resident, nonresident or both flagged per unit row; Tier I and Tier II are residents only. The geography is GMUs and subunits.

Per-unit classification: The unit pages of the 2026-2027 Alaska Hunting Regulations No. 67 (pp.39-139) give species, bag, season, resident/nonresident/both and the permit column (HT versus DM, RM, TM), read with the Drawing and Subsistence supplements..

Things That Trip People Up

  • No program exists, so there is no enrolled list and no acreage question to answer.
  • Tier II permits may be transferred, but only to an Alaska-resident substitute hunter - that is not a landowner mechanism.
  • A licence is required for ages 18-59, with a free permanent identification card at 60+ and none at 17 or under; permanent-ID and disabled-veteran holders still need locking tags, harvest tickets and permits.
  • The regulations booklet calls itself an interpretive summary and not a legal document - 5 AAC and AS Title 16 bind.
