About This Firearm
The Ruger American Rifle Generation II Ranch is a lightweight bolt-action 7.62x39mm built for truck and treestand hunting. It has an MSRP of $769. Its barrel is 16.1 inches with deep spiral flutes and a radial port brake on a 5/8x24 thread, which keeps the whole rifle to 5.9 lbs and 37.35 inches.
The one-piece Picatinny base is fitted at the factory, so rings and an optic are all that is left to add, and steel sling swivel studs are set in the stock. A spacer lifts out of the butt to shorten length of pull from 13.75 inches, the installed low comb comes out when a low-mounted sight goes on, and the Marksman trigger adjusts between 3 and 5 lbs. There are no iron sights. The magazine holds five rounds and one comes with the rifle.
If you're cross-shopping, the Ruger Mini-30 has an MSRP of $1,389 and holds the same five rounds semi-automatically at 7.00 lbs, with a ghost ring rear sight and scope rings in the box. A Riley Defense RAK-47 has an MSRP of $929, carries 30 rounds and also weighs 7.00 lbs. The Ranch is 1.1 lbs lighter than either of them and it is not semi-automatic.
Best For
Strengths & Limitations
- Patented Power Bedding locates the receiver and free-floats the barrel.
- The brake unscrews off a 5/8x24 thread, the common American .30-caliber pattern, so a suppressor mount is an off-the-shelf part on a cartridge widely loaded subsonic.
- Cobalt Cerakote covers the barrel, the receiver and the rest of the barrelled action, so there is no bare metal on the outside to rust.
- The magazine is a Ruger part instead of an AK one, so spares come from a single source at a single price.
- With no iron sights, the rifle cannot be aimed with until an optic is mounted, on a cartridge where a red dot would often be enough.
- A short barrel with a brake on it gives away velocity and puts blast at the shooter's ear, in a cartridge that has little velocity to spare.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it take AK magazines?
No. It feeds Ruger's Mini Thirty pattern magazine, the same one the Ruger Mini-30 uses, so those two share spares.
What twist rate is the barrel?
1:9.5 right hand.
How does the Ranch differ from the standard Generation II American?
A shorter barrel, which Ruger fits to make the Ranch rifles lighter and more compact, plus the Cobalt Cerakote finish and the Flat Dark Earth stock with its black splatter texture.
