About This Firearm

The Kalashnikov USA KR-103 is a fixed-stock semi-automatic AK-103 in 7.62x39mm built for defensive use and range shooting. It has an MSRP of $1,339. Every part of it is made in the United States, down to the rivets, the receiver, the trunnion and the front sight assembly, so it is a built rifle instead of an imported kit with US parts substituted in.

It arrives with a 30-round magazine and a cleaning rod, an AK-74 pattern brake already fitted and a side optic rail on the receiver. The stock is fixed, so there is nothing to fold or set for length, and nothing else on the rifle adjusts either. Kalashnikov USA proof tests every rifle at its own indoor range before it ships. The receiver top and the dust cover carry nothing, so an optic needs an AK side mount.

If you're cross-shopping, the Palmetto State Armory AK-103 has an MSRP of $999.99 with an FN cold hammer forged barrel, a stated 1:9.5 twist and the graduated 800-yard rear leaf. The Zastava ZPAP M70 is built on a 1.5mm bulged trunnion receiver with walnut furniture. All three take the same AKM pattern magazines, so a magazine stock carries over between them.

Best For

GOOD
Range/Target
The barrel is chrome lined and button rifled behind a forged carrier and a forged trunnion, and the brake holds the muzzle down through a fast string.
GOOD
Home Defense
The AK-103 layout is short on controls and simple to run under pressure, and the fixed stock gives the same cheek weld every time a red dot comes up on the side rail.
FAIR
Hunting (Deer/Elk)
7.62x39mm takes deer in close cover and this rifle is capable of it, but a side-mounted optic sits off the bore line and the stock cannot be shortened for heavy clothing.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths
  • The supplied magazine is a US-made steel-reinforced polymer unit, and Kalashnikov USA states that a drum will feed as well.
  • The brake is the pattern first introduced on the AK-74 and still fitted to the AK-12 and AK-15.
  • All AKM and AK-74 furniture fits, so handguards, grips and stocks come from the usual AK suppliers.
Limitations
  • With a fixed stock, the rifle does not shorten for a vehicle, a short case or a shooter in a heavy coat.
  • A side rail mount is an AK-specific part and it sits the sight left of the bore, which takes getting used to behind a magnified optic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a KR-103FT?

FT is the fixed-stock version with the side optic mount, which is this rifle.

Is it an import?

No. Kalashnikov USA builds it to the AK-103 pattern and manufactures the receiver, bolt assembly, trigger group, trunnion, barrel, furniture and gas system parts itself.

How is the barrel rifled?

It is button rifled and chrome lined, which is a different process from the cold hammer forging most AK barrels in this caliber use.
