Hornady's Precision Hunter 143-grain load carries the ELD-X, Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail. At 143 grains it is a heavy bullet for the .260 Remington, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,700 fps with 2,315 ft-lbs of energy. Buyers choose it for the extra bullet weight; the trade-off is speed and recoil.
Compared with Remington's Core-Lokt 140-grain PSP, the nearest load in bullet weight, the ELD-X starts 50 fps slower and kicks about 2 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's Superformance SST, which uses a bullet 14 grains lighter, the ELD-X gives up 230 fps and 144 ft-lbs at the muzzle and kicks about 12 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Precision Hunter if you want a 143-grain polymer-tipped hunting bullet and accept the extra recoil that comes with it. Pick the Core-Lokt if you want nearly the same bullet weight with a little less recoil and a traditional soft point. Pick the Superformance SST if a faster start and lighter recoil matter more to you than bullet weight. Nosler's Trophy Grade 130-grain AccuBond starts at the same 2,700 fps with much lighter recoil, for hunters who can give up the extra 13 grains.
