Product Overview

The Hornady Precision Hunter .260 Remington sends a 143-grain ELD-X bullet downrange at 2700 feet per second, producing 2315 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. This heavier bullet combined with an exceptional 0.625 G1 ballistic coefficient makes it one of the most aerodynamically efficient factory hunting loads available in this caliber. The extra weight and higher BC mean this bullet retains velocity and energy better at long range than lighter alternatives.

The ELD-X differs from its ELD Match sibling through its construction. Hornady engineered this bullet specifically for hunting, with a thicker jacket near the shank that controls expansion while allowing the front portion to mushroom effectively. The Heat Shield tip ensures consistent ballistic performance flight after flight, while initiating reliable expansion across a broad velocity range from 1600 to 3000 fps. This versatility matters when shots can happen anywhere from 50 to 500 yards.

Hunters pursuing deer, elk, and similar-sized game at extended distances will find this load exceptionally capable. The 143-grain bullet carries enough mass to penetrate deeply on larger animals while the controlled expansion creates effective wound channels. Western hunters glassing across canyons and prairie hunters dealing with long shots across agricultural land benefit most from the superior wind-bucking ability. The moderate recoil keeps the shooter comfortable for follow-up shots if needed.

Strengths
  • The 0.625 G1 BC is the highest among .260 Remington factory hunting loads, providing exceptional resistance to wind drift at extreme range
  • Heavier 143-grain bullet retains more energy downrange—still carrying over 1500 ft-lbs past 500 yards
  • ELD-X construction delivers reliable expansion from 1600-3000 fps, covering both close encounters and distant shots
  • Heat Shield tip technology prevents BC degradation during flight that affects standard polymer tips
Limitations
  • Lower muzzle velocity of 2700 fps compared to lighter 129-130 grain loads results in more drop at medium distances
  • The heavy-for-caliber bullet may not stabilize well in rifles with slower twist rates (1:9" or slower)
  • Precision Hunter ammunition commands premium pricing compared to standard hunting rounds
  • The high BC advantages become most apparent beyond 400 yards—for closer hunting, lighter bullets perform similarly
