Product Overview
Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain SP is a soft-point hunting load, and it shares the same published figures as Weatherby's Select 180-grain InterLock. It uses Hornady's InterLock soft point, a cup-and-core bullet with a ring inside the jacket that locks the lead core in place, rated at a G1 BC of .425. It leaves the muzzle at 3,240 fps and still carries 1,890 ft-lbs of energy at 500 yards.
Compared with Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX, the SP starts 8 fps faster but loses speed sooner. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the SP about 11 inches sideways and the TTSX about 10. Zeroed at 200 yards, the SP drops about 34 inches at 500 and the TTSX about 32, and in the same rifle the two kick almost the same. Compared with Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain AccuBond, a polymer-tipped bullet with a bonded core, the SP starts only 10 fps slower, and the two kick almost the same. Between those two, the choice is the bullet, not the speed.
Buy the Select Plus SP if you want a soft point at full .300 Weatherby speed and most of your shots fall inside 300 yards; Weatherby's Select 180-grain InterLock, with the same figures, suits the same hunter. Pick Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core, or if you expect longer shots in wind. Pick Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain AccuBond if you want a bonded core at the same speed. Pick Remington's Core-Lokt 180-grain PSP if you want a plain soft point with a little less recoil; it starts 120 fps slower.
- Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 9 inches at 300, the same as Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX
- Carries the same published figures as Weatherby's Select 180-grain InterLock, so either one fits the same hunt
- Carries 305 ft-lbs more at the muzzle than Remington's Core-Lokt 180-grain PSP
- At 500 yards, a 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 18 inches, against about 16 for Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX
- Kicks about 5 percent more than Remington's Core-Lokt 180-grain PSP in the same rifle
- Carries 1,890 ft-lbs at 500 yards, against 2,087 for Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX
