Product Overview
Weatherby's Select Plus 165-grain SP is the speed option in .300 Weatherby: at 3,390 fps it leaves the muzzle faster than any 180-grain load in the caliber, and it kicks less than any of them. It shares the same published figures as Weatherby's Select 165-grain InterLock. The bullet is Hornady's InterLock soft point, a cup-and-core bullet with a ring inside the jacket that locks the lead core in place, rated at a G1 BC of .387.
Compared with Weatherby's Select 180-grain InterLock, the 165 starts 150 fps faster and shoots a little flatter. Zeroed at 100 yards, the 165 drops about 37 inches at 500 and the 180 about 40. The lighter bullet gives a little back in the wind: at 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the 165 about 19 inches sideways and the 180 about 18. The 180 kicks about 13 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX, the 165 starts faster but slows sooner. The same wind pushes the TTSX about 16 inches at 500 yards, and the TTSX carries 2,087 ft-lbs there against 1,768 for the 165. The TTSX kicks about 12 percent harder.
Buy the 165 if you want a flat path and the lightest recoil, and most of your shots fall inside 400 yards; Weatherby's Select 165-grain InterLock, with the same published figures, does the same job. Pick Weatherby's Select 180-grain InterLock if you want a heavier bullet of the same type. Pick Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain TTSX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core that drifts less at 500 yards. For a polymer tip on a lead core, Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain Ballistic Tip kicks about 13 percent more than the 165.
