Product Overview

Federal's American Eagle 158gr LRN is a straightforward range load for .38 Special revolvers. The 158-grain lead round nose bullet at 770 fps produces mild recoil that most shooters barely notice, even in lightweight snubnose revolvers. That soft push makes it easy to work on trigger control and sight alignment without developing a flinch. New revolver owners and recoil-sensitive shooters will find this load forgiving enough for extended practice sessions.

The traditional bullet weight and profile make this a natural fit for general range work in any .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolver. It feeds reliably through swing-out cylinders and works equally well in full-size duty revolvers and compact carry guns. The lead round nose design generates 208 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, which is modest but expected for a standard-pressure .38 Special load. Brass cases eject cleanly and hold up well for reloaders who want to get extra life from each piece.

Compared to the Remington UMC 158gr LRN at 755 fps, Federal's load runs slightly hotter and produces a bit more energy per shot. Shooters who also own .38 Special lever-action rifles will find this load cycles without issue in guns like the Henry Big Boy or Marlin 1894. The American Eagle line has been a staple of Federal's practice ammunition for decades, and this particular load remains one of the more common .38 Special options on dealer shelves.

Strengths
  • Very mild recoil at 770 fps makes it comfortable for long practice sessions and new shooters
  • Traditional 158-grain bullet weight matches the feel and point of aim of many defensive .38 Special loads
  • Brass cases are reloadable and eject cleanly from revolver cylinders
  • Federal's American Eagle line is widely stocked at most dealers and big-box stores
Limitations
  • Lead round nose bullet will deposit fouling in the barrel and forcing cone over high round counts
  • 770 fps is on the slow side and may not cycle lever-action rifles as reliably as hotter loads
  • No jacketing means indoor ranges with lead ammunition restrictions will not allow this load
  • 208 ft-lbs of energy is low even by .38 Special standards
