Product Overview

Federal's Trophy Copper drives a 165-grain monolithic copper bullet at 2,700 fps with 2,671 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The polymer tip protects the hollow cavity during feeding and flight, then acts as a wedge on impact to start controlled expansion. Because the bullet is solid copper with no lead core to separate, weight retention runs close to 100%. That translates to deep, straight-line penetration on elk, moose, and large bears where a bullet that sheds weight mid-animal can mean a lost trophy.

The 0.503 G1 ballistic coefficient is the highest in this group of .308 loads. It bucks the wind better and retains velocity longer than any of the soft points or match bullets in the same caliber lineup. At 400 yards, the Trophy Copper still carries enough speed to expand reliably, which gives hunters a wider effective range than most lead-core alternatives. The all-copper construction also means zero lead contamination in harvested meat and full legality in California and every other lead-restricted zone.

On impact, the copper body peels back into uniform petals that create a consistent wound channel shot after shot. There is no core-jacket separation, no random fragmentation, and no variation between the first bullet tested and the hundredth. This predictability matters when you are taking a single shot at a bull elk at 300 yards across a canyon. The round costs more than traditional soft points, and copper fouling requires occasional attention with a copper solvent. Those are fair trade-offs for a bullet that performs the same way every time it hits an animal.

Strengths
  • The 0.503 G1 BC is the highest among comparable .308 hunting loads, reducing wind drift and extending effective range
  • Monolithic copper construction retains nearly 100% of bullet weight through bone and heavy muscle
  • Lead-free design is legal everywhere and eliminates metal contamination in harvested game meat
  • Polymer tip ensures reliable expansion even at the lower velocities found past 350 yards
Limitations
  • Premium price point is roughly double that of budget soft point hunting loads
  • Copper fouling builds faster than with jacketed lead bullets and requires a dedicated solvent
  • Point of impact often differs from lead-core ammunition, so a separate zero is necessary
