Product Overview
Federal markets its ELD-X load for big game. The ELD-X is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail. In the .30-06 it has a G1 BC of .552 and leaves the muzzle at 2,750 fps. At 500 yards it still carries 1,567 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Federal's 180-grain Trophy Copper, a polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core, the ELD-X starts 50 fps faster and pulls ahead with distance. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD-X about 17 inches sideways and the Trophy Copper about 19. Zeroed at 100 yards, the ELD-X drops about 54 inches at 500; the Trophy Copper about 57. The two kick the same in the same rifle. Compared with Nosler's Trophy Grade 180-grain Partition, the ELD-X leaves the muzzle at the same speed but drifts less: the same wind pushes the Partition about 20 inches at 500 yards. The Partition kicks about 2 percent harder.
Buy the ELD-X if you hunt big game where shots can stretch to 400 or 500 yards and you want less wind drift than Federal's Trophy Copper or Terminal Ascent. Hornady's Precision Hunter 178-grain ELD-X shows the same speed, wind and drop figures. Pick the Trophy Copper if you want a bullet with no lead core at the same recoil. Pick the Partition if you prefer Nosler's bullet and don't mind the extra drift. If recoil matters most, Barnes's 130-grain TTSX Reduced Recoil, which Barnes makes for young hunters and anyone who prefers lighter recoil, kicks about 46 percent less in the same rifle.
