About This Firearm
The Kimber R7 Mako packs 13 rounds into a 19.5 oz frame, matching the Springfield Hellcat's capacity while adding a 3.37" barrel, the longest in the micro-compact class. That extra barrel length adds 25-40 fps with 124gr loads compared to 3.0" barrels and gives a longer sight radius for iron sight accuracy. TruGlo Tritium Pro sights on both front and rear come from the factory, a feature that normally runs $140-160 as an aftermarket install on other guns.
The stainless steel slide with FNC (Ferritic Nitrocarburizing) finish is harder and more corrosion-resistant than standard nitride. The optic-ready slide accepts micro red dots, and the manual thumb safety adds a layer of mechanical security that some carriers prefer. The 5.9 lb trigger pull is on the heavier side, but the 1:10" left-hand twist barrel is unusual in this class, where most manufacturers use right-hand twist.
Kimber built its name on 1911 craftsmanship before entering the polymer striker market with the R7 in 2021. The move surprised the industry, but the gun's combination of 13-round capacity, premium sights, and American manufacturing filled a gap that no other micro-compact occupied at launch.
Best For
Strengths & Limitations
- TruGlo Tritium Pro sights on front and rear come from the factory, saving the $140-160 aftermarket install that most competitors require
- 13-round capacity in a 19.5 oz frame with a 3.37" barrel, the longest in the micro-compact class
- 5.9 lb trigger pull is heavier than most micro-compacts, and reviewers describe the break as functional but not particularly clean
- Manual thumb safety adds a training step that requires deliberate practice to disengage under stress
- Smaller aftermarket compared to the Glock G43X or Sig P365 family, with fewer holster and accessory options available

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the R7 Mako use a left-hand twist barrel?
Kimber specs the R7 Mako with a 1:10" left-hand twist, which is uncommon in this class. Left-hand twist does not affect accuracy or ammunition compatibility. The choice is a manufacturing preference. All standard 9mm ammunition works identically regardless of twist direction.
How long do the TruGlo Tritium Pro sights last?
Tritium vials have a half-life of about 12 years. The sights will be noticeably dimmer after 10-12 years but remain usable in total darkness for roughly 15 years. Replacement runs about $80-100 for a new set plus installation. The phosphorescent ring around the tritium vial provides a brighter initial glow that helps in low-light conditions where some ambient light exists.
