About This Firearm
HK built the VP9 around one idea: make the grip fit as many hand sizes as possible without modifications. Interchangeable backstraps are common across the industry, but the VP9 adds interchangeable side panels that change palm swell and trigger reach independently. That gives 27 possible grip configurations. Most competitors offer 3-4 backstrap options and nothing else. The difference matters for shooters with unusual hand proportions who cannot get a proper trigger reach from a one-axis grip system.
The gun weighs 25.56 oz with a 4.09" barrel and holds 17 rounds. The trigger breaks at 5.4 lbs with good tactile feedback and minimal creep. Reviewers and owners consistently rate it among the better factory striker triggers. German manufacturing shows in the fit between slide and frame. The optic-ready slide accepts various red dot patterns, though HK's mounting plates are purchased separately. Charging supports on the rear of the slide make press checks and racking easier with wet or gloved hands. All controls are ambidextrous.
Buy the VP9 if grip fit is your top priority and you are willing to pay a premium for German engineering and 27-way adjustability. The ergonomics, trigger, and build quality are genuinely above average. Skip it if aftermarket depth matters to you. HK magazines run significantly more than Glock or Sig magazines, and the holster and parts ecosystem is smaller. The Sig P320 offers similar modularity through a different approach, and the Canik METE SFT matches the capacity with a lighter trigger pull.
Best For
Strengths & Limitations
- 27 grip configurations from interchangeable backstraps and side panels provide the most customizable hand fit in the full-size 9mm class. No other production pistol adjusts both palm swell and trigger reach independently.
- The 5.4 lb trigger has good tactile feedback and minimal creep. Owners and reviewers consistently rank it among the best factory striker triggers available.
- Rear slide charging supports make racking the slide easier with gloved or wet hands. All controls are fully ambidextrous from the factory.
- HK magazines are expensive with limited third-party options. The aftermarket ecosystem for holsters, triggers, and parts is noticeably smaller than for Glock or Sig platforms.
- Optic-ready slide requires separately purchased HK mounting plates, while competitors like the IWI Masada include plates in the box

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the VP9 grip customization work?
The VP9 ships with three backstrap sizes (small, medium, large) and three side panel sizes per side. The side panels change palm swell thickness and alter trigger reach. You can mix sizes freely: a large backstrap with small side panels for maximum circumference with short trigger reach, or any other combination. Each swap takes about 30 seconds with the included tool. All panels and backstraps ship in the box.
Does the VP9 have a manual safety?
No. The VP9 uses a trigger safety and internal firing pin block. There is no external manual safety lever. This is standard for most modern striker-fired pistols. If you want an HK with a manual safety, the VP9-B variant uses a traditional push-button magazine release and is sometimes available with a manual safety in certain European configurations, but the standard US-market VP9 does not offer one.
